HRM Council

I'm worried.

I'm always worried about something that city council is doing. They always seem to find a way to amke me think that I live 50 years ago, when people would ignore what they were told and saw and base life decisions on old assumptions.
Thats what left women, blacks and other oppressed groups fighting for so long and still fighting in many instances.
But its the green space and art support I'm worried about now.
The Kyhber building and the wilderness behind bayer lake have been ASESSED and some study by beancounters and ties will decide on issues that affect all of us. Even those who don't use the parks or like the arts. It changes those around you and causes different vibes.
I find the city hopes that these topics just go past quietly so they don't feel bad.
Where is the vision. Politics doesn't have the vision it used too. Or does it cause Obama has vision. But you can see the sysytem stifle him a bit too.

We need cheap art space I believ to give life to the downtown to more than just bars and condos. Would feel like Japan, cold to a foriegner.
Life is more than just money and sometimes money comes from where you'd never expect it.
As for the green space, come on guys you said yourself you should buy it. Get it done.
Very disappointed. Maybe D'fer will get some good dialogue and thought in there.

Hurry up and wait

We had our best show.

We were organized as a group, getting on top of all the footage.
I spent a great weekend shooting. Lots of great shots with lots of great sound. I could see the stories coming together in my head. Since we got it all shot before monday night we were writing and editing quickly and there was not much stress for everyone. At least not from the show.
Goos rehearshal and all and thursday was our smoothest run yet but,
well, something always has to go wrong and somehow the computer ( that is another story, computers grrrrrrr...) didn't calculate the time right.
But we had copyrighted music in it anyhoo so no go no matter what.
I was frustrated last week when after getting all the other of the line up for the show done my footgae and clips went missing and meant I was late getting my stuff done. I got thru that and was actuall yquite calm when the show didn't air. Not much I could do.

So it will air this week. All good.
We are getting better at running the week. We had some people in thier strong areas.
This will be our last week before internship and xmas.
Wow. Still lots of work to do this week. Looking forward to the end though.
Its hard to belive we have only one semester to go. Holy cremole!

Look at Me

Well well well, three holes in the ground.

No, seriously. We are doing our first show this week. We are all excited and I am sure we will pull together and do a great show. Lots of stress from all sides but I am not getting involved in other peoples stress. I've been around long enough to let some things flow like water off a ducks back.
Or as Bruce Lee said:
Water take form of anything it touches.
Pour water in to cup it take shape of cup.
Pour water on ground and it take shape of ground.
Be like water.

But boy am I excited about anchoring our show tomorrow. I will be on TV!!!
Early in the week I wasn't even thinking about the show that much as I was trying to set up interviews for my sports segment next week. Hard to fit people inot my schedule when I have class in the mornings.
I would be happy not to have classes and just go shoot, interview, edit and produce. I learn way quicker when I am doing it and making mistakes. I am always thinking about other stuff I could be doing while in class. But it is fun. Were making TV!!
I have definitley got better at editing and shooting already. My fellow classmates are very hel[pfull, they just need to relax sometimes.
But I do enjoy my time.
I really like meeting folks (well the ones who want to meet me) and finding out about stuff to share.
BUT we could be losing school time to a strike.
I myself went on strike 5 years ago and it left a bad taste in my mouth. I wouldn't mind a couple days to sleep in and go shoot alot without worrying about class but not more. I am still going to use the resources at school to get reports done and have some fun.
Would like to try the Lipdub thang if we have an extended period of time off.
Lots of students want a strike but it will just add more work on later in the year.

Got to go right now. Got to roll the cue for the Frisko. And he will critique my anchoring.

Tell how the day goes. Wish us all luck.

School Daze

Ok gang

Fall is here and tomorrow is October.

Our first show is this coming week. It is getting down to the red zone. I\ve been shooting last week and editing this week. Computers sure do give me frustration. They really never do mthe same things twice and always find a way to trick you. It's like trying to talk to Stephen Hawking; your on two different mindsets and might as well be speaking seperate languages.

I do work at it but I can navigate a chinese medicine wheel better!

School is fun though, and I am learning. Saw some really good editing and shooting today from people in the biz. It did give me inspiration. Heading to the airport next week to shoot a soundscape. Will have my own escort and I am stoked.
Tomorrow will be a busy day and I need to get scripts written.
I am so focused on school I am more out of the loop from news. By the time I get to a paper it is all old news. I think when I am in radio I will get up early to read the news. Can't enjoy the paper or journal while school is on.
I am starting to see classmates get stressed and even I don't stop to chat as much.
Still want to focus on getting a radio gig at the end of this year.

And all my thoughts and love go out to those I know and those I don't in the Pacific and Sumatra who are suffering again. You do not deserve this.
Next week I'll fill you in on our first show.

Ciao G

Autumn already?

Well, summer has gone by and we'll have to wait lets see.. one, two, three.... uhm six, seven months for short and skirt weather.
At least it has been nice and usually is all fall long here in Nova Scotia.

School is getting busy and we will be airing our first show in two weeks. Very exciting!!
Tune into good ol' Eastlink on October 8th if you want to see the likes of me and my fellow broadcasters give you the lowdown.
It will be different at times as people will be a little unnatural knowing they are on tape thinking they need to be something they are not. And people who will just want the camera to push a certain issue, which I know that is the purpose, but I can get jaded with people when they refuse to see a bigger picture of life. Especially here in Canada where we are extremely blessed.
Yes lots of improvements can be made but we have all the knowledge and resources to do it.

But I digress. Everyone at school appears to be getting into the swing of things and I know it is just going to get busier. I am going to work at staying on top of the work and getting ahead if I can.
I've also got to get my halloween costume idea!
It is so close and I don't know what I'm going to be!
This is one of my favorite holidays and it isn't even a holiday. Not like easter or christmas that cause people to stress out. People can be whomever they want and people seem to be more free on Halloween. And it really is just about having fun, no adherence to religion (well ok maybe in the history somewhere, but we have moved on from that) or nationality or paying respect to a person or time. Just plain old fun.
So a big old raspberry to those who don't like to participate.

Oh yeah. STP is coming. Awesome!
I used to lament this town. We never got good acts I liked to come. Yes STP is maybe past their prime but, wicked! I hated not seeing bigger acts here. But over the last 8 years it has been so much better. Pearl Jam was here and some other good bands. The cold in Canada bothered me too and that gave me extra incentive to go travelling.
Since being back home the music is better and the cold doesn't bother me as much.

rant:
Why is there hockey on already!! Summer wasn't even over yet!
And it only ended three bloody months ago. Sometimes too much of a good thing makes it more unappealing and that is the case of hockey for me. See you in march NHL.
But I'll still win some hockey pools with no complaints.

5 blogs I read

As some who know me, I do love football. It's like my church on Sundays. It is where I am at peace.
I've had to read 5 blogs for school and well, four are in sports.
I tend to read blogs about sports because I like the different information they give me about players, teams and leagues. I watch the sports shows and read the papers but there is a sense of getting, well, more when I read some of these blogs. Maybe it is just that they add to the information I recieve from the other avenues.

The blogs Shutdown Corner and Roto Arcarde on yahoo plus The Fifth Down from the New York Times and Ask Jim Lang: The Say Hey Kid on Sportsnet are the regulars I view.
I decided as well to check out what turned out to be great blog, Uncovering Me written by a friend about her journey through her weightloss. It was really really good.

I find that blogs give me a different perspective of things that I know and see all the time. The sports blogs always have that extra bit of the story that helps me get a better sense of things. They also seem to offer a view that might be more extreme one way or another that isn't normally done in TV or print. Radio? Yeah they can get extreme in radio , especially in sports.
The football blogs let me see a side of things I might not have considered and they have some great inside scoops about injuries or issues on a team you wouldn't find unless you lived in that city and were in the know.
Roto Arcade and Shutdown Corner also give me a laugh. They present the information and stories in a light and entertaining way. They makes stats interesting and help me evaluate talent for fantasy leagues. I get a lot of good info in a small amount of space and it is always up in good time for when the information would be most usefull.
The Fitfh Down has a different style, sometimes even doing interviews in the blog. I was very happy as just last week, my favorite player ever in football and who I think is a role model, Warren Moon, was interviewd about his new book, Never Give Up Your Dream, My Journey.
Once again it is chockfull of great tips and stats. A football junkie can never get enough.
Most of these blogs are a team of people sharing doing blogs.

Ask Jim Lang is something that keeps me tied to rumours and stories in Canada and hockey. He is really smart and has good points on important subjects in sports. I respect his thoughts. Well spoken (tells it like it is) and doesn't take cheap shots and is open to new info to change his mind.
My friend Michelle's blog is very inspiring and made me learn more about her. It is also cool to know the person doing the blogging and she has my respect for doing what she did.
Get lots of good tips and recipes from her blolg and I do like to eat too.

So in many ways I get waht seems like more information from blogs than the other forms of media, but I think it is just a great addition to the other info I get.
Information is king. It is one thing people can't take from you once you have it.

Crisp Excitement in the Air

I have always loved this time of year.
The smell of the air, giving the hint of cold dark nights yet to come but still splashing me with the sun's warmth I love so much.
Everyone shaking off the laziness of summer to get down to business.
To still be able to not wear socks!
And once again I get the excitement of a new school year.
Yes I can still get excited about school.
And now after 15 years out of school I'm back for my 2nd year of a 2 year program.

But who wouldn't with the program I'm taking. Awesome equipment and resources.
Teachers who are as pumped aboutschool as us and a really great group of human beings in my class.
What is it you may ask?
I'm taking Radio and Television Arts at NSCC in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

Shout out to the Darkside!! (have a theory about the origins of this moniker I will share another day)

I'm looking forward to spending alot of time working on school projects and creating content. I don't think I will be able to do everything I want to do with all my fellow students but it will be fun trying.

And to top it all off my Tenessee Titans are opening up the NFL season tonight! I do love my football!
I'll be dropping in at least weekly to muse about me. So hope to catch a moment of your time.

Ciao

rant:: I'm a peacefull man and have lots of patience as some people will atest to.
But I definitley have issue with other drivers. It seems like people drive oblivious to the fact other drivers exist on the road. I know you need to drive safe but stay home or take the bus if you are to timid to make any decisions within a 5 minute span.
I do give myself extra time for delays but one thing I do remember from Young Drivers is Hesitation Kills!
Ithink maybe I will start a driving school or would that drive me crazy even more?
I think maybe its because I'm cranky first thing in the morning.
Nah it still bugs me in the afternoon.
